TONO represents more than 26 000 Norwegian composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. We issue licences for the use of their musical works.

A TONO licence offer businesses the freedom to play, or host the performance of, virtually any kind of music in a public premise. This includes radio and television, online (download, streaming), concerts, cinemas, background music (hotels, restaurants, hairdressers, gyms etc)   to name a few areas. TONO issues licences on behalf of our more than 26 000 Norwegian members, who are exclusively composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers, as well as 3 million rights holders belonging to TONOs sister societies in other countries, in the Norwegian market.  For international music services intending to offer TONO-repertoire to the Norwegian market, an agreement with TONO is necessary.

TONO licenses both streaming services and downloading services with music. This also includes video on-demand services (VoD). TONO’s general tariff for online services is 12% of turnover, with minimum rates corresponding to the various usage types.

Nordic/Baltic licensing

TONO issues licenses for multi-territorial services that are active in more than one of the Nordic/Baltic territories through our cooperation with the other societies in the Nordic Online Coordination Committee (NOCC). The development of the NOCC enables TONO to provide a one-stop shop for those service providers that inquire a multi-territorial license for the Nordic/Baltic area. This solution is time and cost efficient and enables service providers to launch quickly in several countries, thus lowering transaction costs and being a preferable negotiation solution for medium to large service providers. Tariffs for a particular usage are set locally according to the “Tariff of Destination- principle” (TOD), which means that the NOCC-will apply the local tariffs in negotiations.
